another load ready to go - thankful for the four wheel drive when fully loaded and leaving greasy muddy sites like this
Bernie loads a bag of logs as well as his splitter into the Unimog.
Another early start on a saturday morning in January, waiting for the light
Some more work to do clearing some windblown elm trees
A few elms already logged up
A tricky dead elm in danger of crushing the garden fence as the adjacent one had, so needs to come down - but another tree blocking its felling path into the field - so going to use the capstan to "encourage" it down
Directional notch cut in the tree, so now taking up the strain on the capstan as the felling cut is made
Snagged as we thought, so capstan doing the work to get it down - and had enough power to snap the blocking tree whilst pulling the other one through and down
All safely down and logged ready for splitting
and where some of it ends up - this if one half of my woodshed which holds around 12 ton of logs - about 2 years worth of burning for me
Back to the farm again on another bright and frosty February morning to fell the remainder of the dead elms
winching again as they were all wanting to drop over (through) the fence
nylon rope initially, then changed to the manilla which was better
manilla rope being used on another six or so leaning dead elms, leaving the live ash trees in place
all down and logged up
quick bit of splitting but ran out of time after one load so had to leave rest for another weekend
another saturday morning, splitting some of the elm felled in previous weekends
luckily able to do the splitting in the farmers shed rather than out in the sleat
we seem to have collected 16 boxes of the elm in the last two weekends
another nice load
being delivered
then off to split some ash for a friend
and deliver some logs on top of a cliff next to a fishermans cottage on a bitterly cold and windy february day
one week later, and the sun is shining splitting outdoors again, this time with two splitters
two splitters, two people, two hours, about 5 cubic meters of logs for us and the farmer, who had already popped out for some and you can see the woodsmoke coming from the farmhouse behind
Bit wetter this weekend - just cut up some rounds and about to start another two splitter splitathon
Ran out of time due to chainsaw challenges, so just filled the trailer with around 2 tonnes of logs
another weekend, more logs to collect. Kids drying out wet gloves on the radiator (of a stationary engine...)
Long haired Jack shifting some logs up to the splitter using some Timber Tongs
both trailer and Log Rover loaded up with logs and bikes this week - perhaps I need to build a bike rack somewhere on the Log Rover?
A bit different this weekend - asked to remove 5 sycamores growing too closely to a steading about to be renovated
